A boiler that powers up, runs its fan and then locks out without lighting can point towards a gas valve fault, but boiler gas valve troubleshooting starts with one rule: do not remove, adjust or test gas-carrying components unless you are Gas Safe registered. A gas valve is not a general service part. It controls fuel delivery to the burner, so an incorrect diagnosis or setting can create a serious safety risk.
For engineers, the job is to establish whether the valve is actually at fault before ordering a replacement. For landlords, maintenance teams and technically confident homeowners, the useful checks are the non-invasive ones: fault code, appliance condition, boiler history and whether the symptoms support a gas-side issue rather than an ignition, fan, PCB or supply fault.
What the boiler gas valve does
The gas valve receives a demand from the boiler's controls and releases gas to the burner at a controlled rate. On many modern condensing boilers, it works alongside the fan, PCB, air pressure monitoring and ignition system. The appliance must prove the correct sequence before the valve is energised.
That sequence matters because a no-flame fault is not automatically a failed valve. A blocked condensate route, poor ignition lead, damaged electrode, failed fan, incorrect gas supply pressure, harness issue or PCB fault can all stop ignition. Replacing a valve on symptoms alone can mean an unnecessary part cost and a return visit.
A defective valve may fail to open, fail to modulate correctly, stick intermittently, leak internally, or give an electrical fault through its coils or connections. The exact design differs by manufacturer and model. A Vaillant, Baxi, Worcester Bosch, Ideal, Alpha or Biasi valve should only be matched using the boiler model, GC number and, where possible, the manufacturer part number from the original component.
Common symptoms of a gas valve fault
The most common report is repeated ignition failure. The boiler may attempt to light several times, then display a lockout code. In some cases, there is no burner ignition at all despite the fan operating and a spark being present. In others, the burner lights briefly but drops out, or the boiler struggles to maintain a stable flame at low output.
Those symptoms are useful, but they are not proof. A spark with no flame can indicate that the gas valve has not opened, yet it can also be caused by no gas at the appliance, a closed emergency control valve, a faulty ignition arrangement or a blocked burner. A flame that lights then goes out may relate to flame sensing rather than gas valve operation.
Intermittent faults deserve particular care. If the boiler works after a reset or only fails when cold, the cause may be a poor plug connection, moisture damage, a failing PCB relay or a component breaking down under load. Check the appliance history before condemning the valve. A recent leak, boiler casing work or replacement PCB can be relevant.
A smell of gas, signs of scorching, damaged wiring, a loose valve connector or visible corrosion around the gas train are all reasons to stop and arrange a competent inspection. Do not keep resetting the appliance in the hope that it will clear.
Boiler gas valve troubleshooting: safe first checks
Before an engineer carries out combustion or live electrical testing, there are several checks that help narrow the fault without disturbing the gas valve.
Start with the display. Record the full fault code and the boiler model, rather than relying on a description such as “not firing”. Manufacturer fault codes can point towards ignition, flame loss, fan operation or gas supply, but they still need to be interpreted in the context of the appliance.
Check whether other gas appliances are working normally, if safe and appropriate to do so. If a gas hob is also not operating, the issue may be upstream of the boiler. Never use an open flame to check for gas. If you suspect a gas leak, turn off the gas supply at the emergency control valve if it is safe, ventilate the area, avoid electrical switches and contact the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Then look at the basics around the boiler. Confirm that there is power, the system pressure is within the boiler manufacturer's normal operating range, the condensate pipe is not frozen or blocked, and external flue terminals are clear of obvious obstruction. These checks will not diagnose a valve, but they prevent a gas valve being blamed for a simpler lockout cause.
For a heating engineer, the next stage is guided by the manufacturer's service instructions. This may include checking the wiring harness and valve connector, confirming the PCB is sending the correct control signal, measuring supply and burner pressures, and checking combustion with a calibrated flue gas analyser. The valve's offset and throttle settings must only be adjusted in accordance with the appliance data. Guesswork here can produce unsafe combustion or damage the boiler.
Why the PCB, fan and ignition parts matter
Modern boilers use an interlock sequence. The PCB calls for heat, the fan establishes airflow, safety checks are satisfied, ignition begins, the gas valve opens and the flame is proved. A fault at any earlier point can leave the valve closed by design.
A failed PCB is a common lookalike fault because the board may not provide voltage to the gas valve even when all other signs appear normal. Equally, a valve coil can have the correct supply voltage but not operate correctly. That distinction is why voltage checks alone do not always settle the diagnosis.
Fan performance can also affect the outcome. If the boiler cannot prove the required airflow, it should not permit gas. On some appliances, an ignition electrode that is poorly positioned, cracked or contaminated will give the same customer-facing symptom: the boiler tries to start and then locks out. The practical approach is to test the sequence, not chase the most expensive-looking component first.
When replacement is the right answer
Replace a gas valve when a qualified engineer has confirmed an internal electrical or mechanical failure, the valve cannot achieve correct operation or combustion settings, or it has been damaged or contaminated. A valve with a suspected gas leak must not be repaired in situ or reused.
Do not substitute a visually similar valve. Connection layout, calibration range, gas type, control arrangement and manufacturer approval can differ between boiler variants. The right part is identified from the appliance's data badge and the original valve label. Supplying the boiler model, GC number and part number to a specialist parts supplier reduces the risk of ordering a component that looks correct but is not approved for that appliance.
New genuine valves are generally the straightforward choice where availability and budget allow. Depending on the model, a professionally refurbished genuine component can be a sensible cost-controlled option when it has been properly tested and supplied with a clear warranty. The decision depends on the appliance, the repairer's diagnosis and the condition of the wider boiler.
Once fitted, the work is not complete at ignition. The engineer must carry out the relevant gas-safety checks, confirm correct combustion and operation across the boiler's range, and leave the appliance safe. A replacement valve that has not been commissioned correctly is not a finished repair.

Have the boiler make and exact model, GC number, original part number, clear photographs of the existing valve label and connector, plus the engineer's diagnosis.
