It only works, however, when the part has been properly assessed, restored and tested, and when the boiler model and part number have been confirmed.
What counts as a refurbished boiler valve?
A refurbished valve is a previously used genuine component that has been inspected and reconditioned for further service. Depending on the component, this may involve cleaning, replacing worn serviceable items, checking electrical operation, testing movement or flow, and confirming that the part performs as intended before sale.
The term boiler valve covers several different parts. A gas valve controls the gas supply to the burner and is a safety-critical component. A diverter valve directs heated water between central heating and domestic hot water. Other related components may include pressure relief valves, filling valves, isolation valves and external motorised valves. They are not interchangeable categories, and a fault in one does not automatically mean another type of valve is suitable.
A reconditioned diverter valve assembly may be a practical repair route for an older boiler with an otherwise sound heat exchanger, pump and controls. A gas valve requires much greater caution. Any work involving the gas train, combustion settings or gas safety checks must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
When a refurbished valve is the right choice

Fitting one valve will not resolve a system problem such as contaminated water, an incorrectly set expansion vessel or a damaged wiring harness.
The value is in a targeted repair. Confirm the diagnosis first, then compare the cost, availability and warranty of refurbished and new options. A one-year warranty on many reconditioned parts gives useful protection, but it does not replace correct installation or fault-finding.
Guide to refurbished boiler valves: identify the exact part
The boiler’s make and model are a starting point, not a complete identification method. Manufacturers often use different valve versions across production years, even within the same boiler range. The safest approach is to match the manufacturer part number from the existing component wherever possible.
Before ordering, record the boiler model, GC number, serial number and the full number shown on the valve label. Check the electrical connector layout, mounting points, pipe connections and any calibration or configuration references. For diverter valves, establish whether you need the complete body, a cartridge, a valve motor or a microswitch assembly. Ordering a motor when the hydraulic body has failed creates another visit and more downtime.
Do not rely only on photographs. Similar-looking valves can have different plug types, operating voltages, gas settings or internal port arrangements. Safety checks are not optional
Gas valves should only be replaced, adjusted or commissioned by a competent Gas Safe registered engineer. Once fitted, the appliance must be checked in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. That normally includes soundness testing where gas connections have been disturbed, correct gas rate or combustion analysis as applicable, and confirmation that the boiler ignites, modulates and shuts down correctly.
Never transfer settings from one gas valve to another on assumption alone. Some valves require specific setup procedures, and incorrect adjustment can cause unsafe combustion, lockouts or damage to the appliance. A valve that physically fits may still be unsuitable for that boiler.
For wet-side valves, isolate the electrical supply before removing covers or disconnecting wiring. Isolate and drain the relevant circuit where required, and use new seals or O-rings where the manufacturer specifies them. After reassembly, check carefully for water leaks and make sure system pressure is restored to the correct cold-fill level.
A pressure relief valve that has discharged repeatedly should not simply be treated as a faulty valve. Check the expansion vessel charge, system pressure behaviour and any filling-loop passing before deciding on the repair. Otherwise, the replacement may discharge again shortly after installation.
What to expect from a properly reconditioned part
Condition matters more than the word refurbished. A credible reconditioned component should be a genuine, serviceable unit that has been examined for damage and tested according to its function. On arrival, inspect the valve before installation. Compare it directly with the removed part, including labels, ports, plugs and fixing locations. Check that any supplied actuator, gasket or retaining clip is present. A warranty is valuable, but understand what it covers. Diagnose the fault before replacing the valve
A boiler that delivers heating but no hot water may point to a sticking diverter valve, but it could also be a faulty sensor, actuator, PCB output or blocked plate heat exchanger. Likewise, ignition failure does not prove that the gas valve is at fault. Fan operation, air pressure proving, ignition components, gas supply and control signals all need checking in the correct sequence.
Look for the pattern. Does the fault occur on hot water demand only? Does the valve motor receive the correct command voltage? Is there physical movement but no change in water flow? Has the system pressure risen sharply during heating? These observations help separate a valve failure from an underlying electrical or hydraulic issue.
Replacing parts by guesswork is rarely cheap, even when the part itself is competitively priced. A clear diagnosis protects the customer, the engineer and the boiler.
Fit for reliability, not just for today
Once the correct refurbished valve has been selected, install it to the appliance manufacturer’s procedure and complete the relevant functional checks. On a diverter valve repair, confirm both heating and hot-water operation. On a hydraulic repair, inspect for leaks at operating temperature and pressure. On any gas-side repair, complete the required gas safety and combustion checks before returning the boiler to service.
