A boiler that powers up but will not fire, locks out intermittently, or displays an apparently unrelated fault code can quickly lead to the same question: is the PCB at fault? A PCB can fail, but it should be the result of a proper fault-finding process rather than the first component changed. What a Vaillant PCB board controls
The printed circuit board, often called the main PCB or control board, is the boiler's electronic control centre. It receives signals from components such as the thermistors, pressure sensor, fan, pump, gas valve and ignition circuit. It then decides whether operating conditions are safe and correct for ignition and continued running.
On many Vaillant appliances, the PCB also manages the display, fault-code reporting, central-heating and hot-water demand, pump overrun, frost protection and fan speed monitoring. Symptoms that can point to a PCB fault
A PCB should be considered when checks on the boiler's connected components and electrical supply do not explain the problem. Common signs include a completely blank display despite a confirmed power supply, repeated lockouts with no consistent component fault, relays clicking without the expected output, or a boiler that behaves differently as it warms up.
Intermittent faults deserve particular care. A boiler may run correctly during an engineer visit but fail later due to a dry solder joint, heat-related component failure or moisture affecting the board. Visible evidence can help, including scorching around relays, swollen capacitors, corrosion, loose plugs or staining from a leak. However, an apparently clean PCB is not automatically serviceable, and visible damage does not prove the board was the original cause.
Before condemning the PCB, check the incoming electrical supply, fuse, polarity and earth continuity. Then inspect the wiring harnesses and plugs for heat damage, loose connections and moisture. Test the relevant sensors, fan, pump, gas valve and pressure-switching or pressure-sensor circuits in line with the appliance instructions. Compatibility matters more than boiler series

Some replacements require configuration or commissioning steps after fitting. New, refurbished or repair service?
The best option depends on the boiler's condition, urgency and the exact fault. A new genuine PCB is generally the straightforward choice when the correct part is available, the appliance has plenty of useful life left and the repair needs the highest level of manufacturer-specification certainty.
A refurbished PCB is often well suited to cost-controlled repairs on older, otherwise serviceable boilers. It can be particularly useful for landlords managing multiple properties or engineers repairing equipment where a new board would make the job uneconomical. The important distinction is between a tested, warranted reconditioned board and an untested second-hand item removed from another boiler. The latter carries obvious risks around hidden faults, incorrect part identification and unknown history.
Repairing the customer's original PCB can also be a sensible route if the board is repairable and the boiler can remain off line while it is assessed. This may retain the exact original specification and avoid compatibility concerns. It is less suitable for a no-heating emergency where a replacement is needed immediately, or where the board has suffered severe physical damage.
Ordering without creating a repeat visit
For a first-time-right repair, record the full boiler model, GC number, serial number and PCB part number before ordering. Take clear photographs of the board label, plug positions and any visible damage. It is also worth recording the original fault code and the tests already completed. If the boiler is locking out on ignition, for example, a replacement board should not be ordered until the ignition electrode, lead, gas supply, fan operation, condensate route and relevant safety circuits have been considered. The same principle applies to pump and sensor faults. A PCB can report the fault accurately while another component is the actual problem.
Keep the old PCB until the boiler is proven to be operating correctly. It may be needed for comparison, possible refurbishment assessment or verification of the original part number.
